Letters from the Fifth Floor

three letters on the everyday mind, posted from a psychology practice in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

The hand behind the letters

Who writes these, and why

The room

The letters are written at Daniela Pinheiro Psicologia e Psicanálise, a practice of psychology and psychoanalysis registered in Brazil, from a fifth-floor room on Rua Antônio de Albuquerque, in Savassi, Belo Horizonte. The practice sees people one at a time, in Portuguese, in person, by appointment, and that part of its work never appears on these pages.

Why in English, for someone far away

Because the things that come up in that room, again and again, are not Brazilian things. Where attention goes, what the dark does to a worry, what hurry costs: these are the same in Ohio as in Minas Gerais. Writing them as letters to a reader who will never sit in the armchair was a way of saying them plainly, without jargon, to someone who owes nothing back.

What the letters are not

They are not a consultation and they are not advice to you in particular. The practice does not take on people from abroad and does not answer clinical questions by e-mail. If anything you read here sits heavily, the honest next step is a conversation with someone qualified where you live.

A note on money

To be open about it: the practice is enrolled with a few online sellers as a referrer. If one day a page on this site points to something those sellers offer, and you buy it through that link, the seller pays the practice a share of the sale; the price to you does not change. No page of that kind exists here as this is written, and if one is ever added it will be marked as such at the top. The practice may also, at some point, post a talk on video here; it would be presented as the practice's own and would not stand in for a conversation in person.
